Measles Planning

The Manheim Central School District is closely monitoring measles activity in Lancaster County and surrounding areas and is following guidance from the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

At this time, there are no confirmed cases of measles in any of the Manheim Central School District schools.

The District will continue to monitor the situation and update this information as needed based on guidance from public health officials and any changes in circumstances.

Measles Health Information

What is Measles?

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by a virus. Unimmunized individuals exposed to the virus have a 90% chance of developing the illness. Symptoms may include:

Fever
Cough
Runny nose
Red or watery eyes
Rash that typically begins on the face and spreads downward

Please keep sick children at home, call your doctor before visiting a clinic if you suspect measles, and review your child's MMR records with your healthcare provider.

The MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine is the most effective way to prevent measles. Two doses of the MMR vaccine offer 97% lifelong protection, making up-to-date vaccination our best defense. Pennsylvania school immunization requirements include 2 doses of MMR vaccinations unless a medical or religious exemption is on file.

Families and staff are encouraged to:

Know their vaccination status.
Review their child's immunization records.
Contact their healthcare provider with questions about vaccination.

What Happens If There Is A Confirmed Case?

If a measles case is identified within a school building or at a school-sponsored activity, the District will work closely with the Pennsylvania Department of Health who determines appropriate measures for individuals who may have been exposed.

If your child or family is directly impacted by a confirmed exposure, the District will provide specific information and guidance at that time.

Reviewing applicable health and safety protocols.
Maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of individuals involved in health-related concerns.
