March Newsletter - From the Desk of Dr. Aiken, Superintendent of Schools

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

Being a lifelong basketball player/fan, I love this time of year. March signals a month long journey of great basketball and entertainment. But…that’s not all that makes this the most wonderful time of the year.

A few years ago, I attended a training for school principals. We read a case study examining the education in Singapore. Historically, Singapore has led industrialized nations in test scores. Their math achievement scores are almost always the best.

Yet, Singapore had a major struggle they could not remedy. No matter how hard they tried…they could never emulate the creativity of students in America. This case study has always resonated with me…and really shaped my sentiments around standardized tests.

What does any of this have to do with March being the most wonderful time of the year? This week, if you have the opportunity, we will showcase the creativity Singapore has lauded for years.

First, we have the MCSD Art Show in the Farm Show Building. Student art work will be on display Thursday and Friday. If you have the opportunity, stop in to see brilliance and creativity on display. Our art teachers do a phenomenal job of inspiring our kids to creatively display their talents.

Also, this Thursday through Sunday, we have our annual Spring Musical. This year, our Theater Department  will be performing The Pajama Game. I am always amazed at how talented the kids are…and the absolute bravery, commitment, and charisma in which they perform.

If you are looking for a reason to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year, stop out at the High School or Farm Show Building to see poetry in motion.

Perhaps most importantly, nothing you see Thursday through Sunday will appear on a standardized test.
