April Newsletter From the Desk of the Superintendent
It is hard to believe we are down to our last quarter of the year. It won’t be long and another year will be in the books…
The purpose of this month’s newsletter is to let you know of an important meeting on the horizon. On April 15th, at 6 PM in the Middle School Auditorium, we will hold a Community Forum on the renovation at the High School. The School Board is yet to officially decide upon a schematic design option. The choices are narrowed to three. Your attendance and input is welcomed and appreciated.
In the meantime, I would like to provide some background information on how we got to this point.
In May of 2017, the Board tasked me with undertaking a feasibility study on the High School to determine the health and well-being of the building. We worked with two architecture firms to complete the study, EI Associates and CRA Architects. After public presentations by both firms, the Board agreed to partner with CRA Architects to address the concerns of the High School.
In short, we know over the next 2-5 years, the High School will require around 10 million dollars in repairs alone. Rather than simply deal with the bare minimum repairs, the Board has decided upon a forward focused vision for the High School. The scope of this project is now to renovate the High School and to future proof the school for the next 30-40 years. With the three design options being proposed, we are looking at a range of $35-40 million for the project.
Since August, CRA Architects have worked closely with the Facilities Committee, the Board, the Administration, and the Faculty to brainstorm ideas on a schematic design. You can view the most recent presentation posted on the District Website or by clicking this link.
On April 15th, representatives from CRA will explain the three design options and what is included in each option. As well, we will have student representatives give their respective opinion on the choices. Finally, Mr. Howett, our Business Manager, will discuss the financial impact of this project. To conclude the meeting, there will be an opportunity to hear from you, our community members.
If you are not able to physically make the meeting, we are going to livestream the meeting. You can navigate to the District Home Page as follows: Home Page→ School Board Tab→Board Meeting Live Streaming Tab. As always, if you have any questions, concerns, or comments, please feel free to reach out to me here at the District Office. I welcome the opportunity to meet and discuss.
In the meantime, I hope your spring is off to a great start. And, most importantly, I hope to see you on the 15th. Proud to be a Baron!
